Actors Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, who made their Bollywood debuts with Karan Johar‘s Student of the Year, appeared on the filmmaker’s chat show Koffee with Karan together. The show is currently airing its eighth season, and has previously featured guests such as Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor, and brothers Bobby and Sunny Deol.

During the episode, Sidharth and Varun looked back on their time shooting for Student of the Year, and grew nostalgic as they recalled when Sidharth broke Varun’s nose by accident while filming his first-ever action scene. Karan said that actor Alia Bhatt, who was also making her debut with the film, started shrieking on set, which is when he realised that Varun had actually been injured.

“It was not his fault,” Varun clarified, as Sidharth recalled being mortified. “First action sequence ever in life, and just a mistake…” he said. Varun had to be taken to hospital, where his father, filmmaker David Dhawan, and brother Rohit seemed to be more concerned about Sidharth. “They were only worried about Sid,” Karan recalled. “They were like, ‘Yeh Varun ki galti hogi, woh extra enthu hogaya hoga (It must have been Varun’s fault, he must’ve become overenthusiastic)’. They were like, ‘Is Sid okay? Tell him it’s fine’.”

Sidharth said that Varun’s father and brother were both ‘very sweet’, and Varun joked that they were probably hoping for him to get hit by somebody. In the rapid fire segment of the episode, Varun recalled another anecdote about getting injured on a movie set, and how his father reacted. Asked what the meanest thing a director has ever said about him, Varun said, “So, when I was shooting for Main Tera Hero, I had a bike shot entering the college, and I fell down. And my dad said on the mic, ‘Arey yeh Dharma ka hero hai, bahut nazuk hai (He’s a delicate Dharma hero)’.”

Karan didn’t know how to react to this piece of information. “I’m making boys nazuk?” he asked, and after taking a pause, added, “I like that.” The filmmaker’s latest release, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, was praised for its portrayal of masculinity, and for presenting Ranveer Singh’s character as more emotionally vulnerable than the average Bollywood hero.
