A BJP councillor of the Ahmedabad civic body has resigned for remaining absent from the Municipal Board for long after he has moved to the US with his family.

Manoj Patel, the BJP councillor from Ghatlodia ward, resigned Tuesday, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s BJP Leader Gaurang Prajapati confirmed. “He has shifted to the US with his family around six months back,” Gaurang Prajapati told The Indian Express.

The development comes amid rumours that the party was mulling to seek resignation from another BJP councillor — Chetan Parmar from Khokhra ward — who too has been absent for long. However, Prajapati refuted the claim, adding that Parmar has confirmed to be back next month.

“There is only one resignation and no other BJP councillor is to resign or party to seek any resignation. Chetan Parmar still has time till January as he had already submitted leave for three months. So, if he does not attend the Municipal Board in January then he will be required to resign,” Prajapati told The Indian Express.

Parmar, who is also a member of the recreation, cultural and heritage committee, shifted to London with his family around six months back. “Chetan Parmar has called me today and confirmed that he will be back in December,” Prajapati said.

Festive offer

The next Municipal Board is scheduled on Friday. Usually, the monthly boards are held in the last weeks of the month. As per the rules, if a councillor remains absent continuously from four Municipal Boards, then their membership is cancelled.
