Ekta Kapoor was honoured with the prestigious International Directorate Award at the 51st International Emmy Awards ceremony in New York on Tuesday. As Ekta took the stage to receive the award, she spoke about her journey as a producer from the time she and her mother Shobha Kapoor started their company Balaji Telefilms in father Jeetendra’s garage.
Ekta said that she and mother started their company when she was only 18 and for the first 7-8 years of her career, they were known as “lady producers” as this was a male dominated space at the time. “The irony is the world’s population is solely produced by women,” she said as the crowd chuckled in agreement. Ekta then proceeded to thank her brother Tusshar Kapoor and father Jeetendra as they were babysitting her son Ravi.

She said, “I’d also like to thank the men in my life. My father and my brother, who are currently babysitting my son. You make my home wholesome if not conventional. I’d like to thank our two boys, my son and my nephew – Laksshya and Ravi, our surrogate babies who taught me the toughest paths can sometimes lead you to magic. I’m a single mother.”
Ekta Kapoor then dedicated her award to India and said, “Above all, I’d like to thank my country India. In you, I find a reflection of me. You’ve been pulled, pushed, conquered, ruled and as you found your freedom, you found your voice.” She concluded her speech by saying, “My motherland, I am bringing home your Emmy.”
Tusshar Kapoor shared a clip of Ekta’s winning moment on Instagram with the caption, “History once again, @ektarkapoor 👏👏👏 @iemmys.” Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna also shared a clip from the event and wrote, “Ektaa owned the International Emmy Awards today. So much authenticity, pride & dignity. Every word was from heart. This is to our motherland. #CreatingHistory.”
