When you are in your 30s, what may have worked for you in your 20s, might not. And in the ever-evolving world of beauty and skincare, there are various skincare ingredients — packed with multiple benefits — that are suitable for each group.

Yes, you read that right. Depending on your age group, there’s an ingredient whose benefits far outrank the rest. So, we turned to experts to explore the specific skincare ingredients that can help you tackle skin woes as per your age demands.

In yours 20s

The humble sunscreen may be the unsung hero in the world of skincare, but its benefits surpass all age groups. Especially, if you’re in your 20s, this ingredient must find a place on your shelf. “The most important skincare ingredient for people in their 20s is sunscreen. Sun damage is the leading cause of premature skin ageing, so it is important to protect your skin from a young age,” says Dr Seema Oberoi, consultant of dermatology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.

She advises using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. “Apply it liberally to all exposed skin every day, even on cloudy days.”

Another ingredient that is a must-add for a 20-year-old-something is hyaluronic acid. “This hydrating ingredient helps maintain skin moisture and suppleness. It is a natural component of the skin but diminishes over time. Using products with hyaluronic acid can help keep your skin hydrated and prevent early signs of ageing,” explains Dr DM Mahajan, senior consultant, dermatology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

As you reach your 30s, your skin naturally begins to produce less collagen and elastin — proteins that keep your skin looking firm and plump. This is where retinol comes in. “Retinol can help boost collagen and elastin production, which can help reduce the signs of ageing. A derivative of vitamin A, it speeds up cell turnover and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is also effective at treating acne and hyperpigmentation,” shares Dr Oberoi.

Vitamin C is another ingredient that must be added to your daily regimen. “It is an antioxidant that helps brighten skin, even out skin tone, and protect against environmental damage. The ingredient also boosts collagen synthesis — promoting firmer, more youthful-looking skin,” Dr Mahajan notes.

In your 40s

As you approach your 40s, your skin produces even less collagen and elastin than your 30s. The signs of ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin, become even more noticeable, making niacinamide a powerful addition to your routine. “Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that helps to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce redness and inflammation, and improve skin tone and texture,” Dr Oberoi says. Enhancing the skin’s barrier function helps retain moisture and promotes a healthier complexion.

Peptides too, can elevate your skincare game and address skin concerns prominent in your 40s. “These amino acid chains support collagen production, improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles,” Dr Mahajan recommends.

In yours 50s

If you are in your 50s, you may have experienced super dry and lackluster skin that has lost its glow and smoothness. Your skin gets thinner and floppier as you cross the half-century. This is due to decreased estrogen levels and loss of hydration.

In such a scenario, Dr Mahajan advises including growth factors in your routine. These are proteins that are naturally produced by skin cells, which help keep the skin alive and healthy. “Introducing growth factors in cosmeceuticals can promote the growth of collagen, leading to skin firmness and elasticity.”

Skincare ingredients rich in antioxidants are also crucial components. “Ingredients like green tea extract and resveratrol can protect the skin from environmental damage caused by free radicals that accelerate ageing,” Dr Mahajan says.

Remember, consistency is key. It is important to be patient when starting a new skincare routine, as it can take several weeks or even months to see results.
