Shweta Sharda, 22, who is representing India at the 72 Miss Universe being held in Central America’s El Salvador, dazzled in an interesting goddess outfit for the National Costume round. Giving a regal feel, Shweta decked up in an embroidered blouse with a heavily embellished traditional skirt, which had overlapping detail. She also had an ornate golden headgear and chunky accessories to complement the vintage glam look.
Miss Diva Org, the official page of the beauty pageant detailed the look designed by costume designer Nidhi Yasha which took three months to be created.
“I wanted to emphasise India’s diversity and cultural/religious harmony, integrity and secular identity, as it’s a need of the hour,” Nidhi, founder director, The NY Studio told indianexpress.com.
In a press statement, Miss Diva Org on Instagram detailed, “India’s National Costume designed by @nidhiyasha symbolises a new, resilient India, weathering storms and emerging powerful. It embodies diversity, integrity, strength, and resilience, showcased in an armoured goddess look. The power shoulders and engineered bodice highlight the feminine form’s gentle yet strong disposition.”
Were there any discussions with Shweta before the costume trial? Nidhi, a NIFT, New Delhi, and IIM Ahmedabad alumna recalled, “Not really. The girl surrendered completely to the team. I met and briefed her after the outfit was ready.”
Notably, the headgear featured a lotus halo, representing the coexistence of India’s diverse religions and cultures, with the lotus as the national flower. “The lower half resembles a mystical golden peacock, India’s national bird, with handcrafted peacock feather embroidery,” it read.
The fluid Organza skirt and dramatic long trail contrast the structured upper body, showcasing how India thrives in its beautiful contrasts and balances. “Get ready to be mesmerised as this diva takes the stage, showcasing India’s strength, power, resilience, and determination through this fabulous National Costume. She is INDIA, the woman of TODAY!”
“The skirt and the dramatic long trail are fluid Organza, a total contrast to the structured upper body, highlighting how the country thrives in its contrasts and balances them beautifully,” mentioned Nidhi.
